Woodstock, "Rabbi SD Grawitzky"

Photograph of Rabbi Shlomo Dovid Grawitzky on a Cape Town street with a mountain behind him. Rabbi SD Grawitzky was the Rabbi for Woodstock shul during the 1930s until 1943. He established a Talmudical society at Woodstock shul, giving a Talmud shiur, was a shochet, and also became a member of the Cape Town Beth Din. Photograph provided by David Grawitzky.

Woodstock, "Mike Gelbart Weekday Maariv"

Audio recording of Mike Gelbart reciting the weekday maariv/evening prayers for the prayer leader/shaliach tsibbur. An Ashkenazi pronunciation and tune can be heard appropriate for a baal tefila/prayer leader with a pleasant voice. Originally recorded on cassette tape by Mike Gelbart for his son Herschel Gelbart who was then in Durban. This is one of a number of recordings of different parts of the synagogue service that he made. Over the years Herschel made copies of these recordings for others and later they were digitised by his cousin Sidney Getz (Mike's nephew). Audio recording of Mike Gelbart reciting the Shabbat haftora blessings. These are recited during the Shabbat morning prayer service before and after reading a portion from the Prophets/Neviim. An Ashkenazi pronunciation and tune can be heard. Originally recorded on cassette tape by Mike Gelbart for his son Herschel Gelbart who was then in Durban.
