Scope and content

This collection gathers images taken by Hyman Schauder, beginning aboard a ship from London to Leningrad.

Schauder arrives in Leningrad, moves through Moscow, and on toward a village collective farm, where more communist meetings are held in a room with busts and paintings of Lenin, Stalin and Molotov.

While in Moscow, Schauder also photographs a large sports parade, which was marching through Red Square. Even though it was illegal to take photographs on Red Square, Schauder captured these images.

Schauder moved from USSR, through the Ukraine and on to Palestine and Israel. He shows particular interest in the market places of both places. In Tel-Aviv, Schauder was very fond of the modern architecture. In Jerusalem, Schauder visited the Wailing Wall and the university.

In Italy, Schauder visited Rome, Venice, Milan, Naples and Pompeii. In Switzerland, he did research work in Geneva. The trip ended back in London.
