Zimbabwean Jewish Community, "Peter Sternberg"

Portrait photograph of Peter Sternberg, 1935 – 2016. Born in Germany and at the age of four fled Nazi Germany with his parents and settled in Southern Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) in 1939. His father at first worked for B. S. Leon a Sephardi Jew from Rhodes Island. His father then work at the Italian internment camp near Gatooma as an accountant and after the war settled there. Peter went to Jameson Primary School and later to Prince Edward School in Salisbury. In 1952 he joined his fathers accounting firm. Peter was chairman of the Gatooma Public Library for over thirty years and also Chairman of the Gatooma Hebrew Congregation which his father founded. He was also a member of the Gatooma Round Table and the Gatooma Rotary Club.

Zimbabwean Jewish Community, "Leon Family Que Que 1940s"

Photograph of the Leon family. Marie Leon (Nee Beneveniste) and Haim Leon with sons Jacky and Benny Leon, who lived in Que Que before moving to Gatooma in 1942. Marie and Haim Leon were born in Rhodes and were married in Gatooma in 1934. Haim born 1904 died May 1944. Marie borm 1912 died 2004 aged 92. Jacky born 1939 died in a motor accident in July 1961.

Zimbabwean Jewish Community, "Gatooma Synagogue"

Photograph of the synagogue consecrated in 1953 which was the communal centre for about sixty Jews in the small mining and agricultural town of Gatooma 140 kilometres west of Salisbury (Harare).The Gatooma Hebrew Congregation was founded by Robert Sternberg who fled Nazi Germany and arrived in Rhodesia in 1939. Previously he conducted the High Holidays services at various venues. With the establishment of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland the economy boom and so did the Jewish population. At its peak there were 7000 Jews living in Rhodesia. The congregation flourished for a while until congregants chose to move to the larger centres of Salisbury (Harare). By 1980s with hardly any congregants the synagogue was sold to a church group who later demolished it.
