Barsel Family, "80th Birthday of Esther"

Photograph of the 80th birthday cake for Comrade Esther (Esther Barsel) who was a member of the Communist Party. A party in her honour was thrown by the South African Communist Party, in Johannesburg in 2004. The cake has the emblem of the party on the right hand corner and the icing is coloured red.

Group photograph of Hymie Barsel and his three daughters. This photograph is one of 8 photographs taken of Hymie Barsel which were sent to his wife Esther Barsel in Barberton Prison. She was a member of the South African Communist Party. In 1964 she was arrested and subsequently tried with 13 others in the Bram Fischer Treason Trial. In 1965 she was sentenced to three years imprisonment at Barberton Prison from 1965-1967. Photographed from left to right are Linda Barsel, Merle Barsel, Hymie Barsel and Sonia Barsel.
