Blieden Family, "Register of Zundel Blieden"

Handwritten documentation of the registration of Zundel Blieden's family in Staro-Shagaren, Lithuania (Žagarė, Lithuania), 1848. Zundel Blieden (1814-c1882) was a grain merchant. He married Nese Saganowsky (1814 – c1887) and they had nine children, 5 sons and 4 daughters. Their children were Benjamin Blieden (1834 – 1890), Jacob (Yankel) Blieden (1835-1912), Abraham Blieden (1843 – 1939), Feige Latzky (nee Blieden) (1843 -1919), Sheine (Jennie) Tort (nee Blieden) (1844-1930), Yehuda (Julius) Blieden (1851- 1904), Marcus (Mordechai) Blieden (1852-1913), Freida Wolfson (nee Blieden) (1855-1923) and Jacha Blieden. This document lists Zundel, his wife Nese, sons Benjamin, Yankel, Abraham and daughters Feige and Sheine. It also lists Zundel's brothers Ber, Grisha and Leiba and his sister-in- law Leah, wife of Leiba.

Photograph of Rachel Keile (Rochel Kayla) Fleish (c1887-1949), daughter of Movsha and Zilpah Fleish (nee Hoff). The family lived in Šeduva (Shadeve) Lithuania and there were six children. The family was listed in the Tax and Voters list of Šeduva in the postal savings bank records, which documents a deposit of 5 rubbles for 4 of the children by their father Movsha, son of Chaim. Lithuanian postcards, "Friedland Finkelshtein wedding invitation"

Photograph of the wedding invitation of Cherna Finkelshtein (1882-1968) and Izrael Friedland (1875-1917) which was held on the 25th March 1905 in Kaunas, Lithuania. The invitation is written in Russian with the Cyrillic script. The marriage was held on the 24th March 1905 corresponding to the 1st Nissan 5665. Izrael Khaim Friedland was the son of Leizer Friedland of Vilkija, Lithuania and was 30 years old. Cherna Finkelshtein was the daughter of Leizer Finkelshtein of Yurburg, Lithuania and was 23 years old. Their witnesses were Khaim Kivel Ryznik and Naftel Perelman. The Friedlands had 4 children. Twin daughters were born in 1907 in Kaunas. The twin, Basha Peshel Friedland died in 1910 at the age of 3 years in Kaunas, Lithuania. The other twin was Hannah Leah Amoils (nee Friedland) and there were two sons, MIchael Friedland and Hillel Friedland. The Friedland family emigrated to South Africa. Family photograph of Dr Louis Mirvish; Seine (Seina) Ette Mirvish (nee Margolis); Jacob Mirvish; Rabbi Moses Chaim Mirvish; Sophie Anziska (nee Mirvish); and Naomi Aronson (nee Mirvish). Taken pre-emigration in ‘Plungian’, Lithuania, in 1905. Photograph was taken before Abe Mirvish was born.

Spanish flu, "Photograph of Heyman Shochet"

Photograph of Heyman Shochet. It was taken in 1912 in Rokiškis, Lithuania. Following his immigration to South Africa he settled in Parys, Orange Free State. In 1918, he fell ill with the Spanish Flu 'and was removed to the High School which had been temporarily converted into a hospital. At that time there were between 50 and 60 people accommodated in the school. Several people died the first night there'. Source: Granddaughter, Kathy Kransdorff, Johannesburg.
