Namaqualand, "Caplan, 5"

Letter written on the 22nd of September 1913 by M Caplan (Mick) to thank a friend for the condolences received with regards to the death of his older brother. A personalised letterhead featuring details about the Caplan brothers' store (H. Caplan and Bros.) can be seen at the top.

Photograph of Caple Caplan's wife, Florrie (nee Paepert), holding their 2-year-old son, Victor. When sending the picture to someone she wrote the following: "In this one he was crying for Caple, and I am mocking him, so we both look a treat, but I'm sending it to you for fun. Don't we look comical here?"

Photograph of a group of men, many of whom were local shopkeepers. This group possibly constituted a Dorpbestuur (town council) in O'okiep. Three memebers of the Jewish community identifiable here are Louis Josman (standing at the end of the row on the far right), Ephrahim Bernstein (seated at the far right end of the middle row), and Israel Gordon (seated in the middle row to the left of Ephrahim).

Photograph of a large lump of "native" copper found in the Richtersveld Blue Mine in 1918. The nugget is recorded as belonging to Mr Giffen, a prospector from Port Nolloth. This photograph was taken in the mountains about 6 miles South of Ganna Gariep.
