Georgina Jaffee, Joffe Marks and Jaffee Family Series

Joffe Marks brought Harry Jaffee (married Pinn) and his sister Dora ( married Bloom) out to South Africa at the age of 13 and 15 respectively.

Harry went to Maritz Brothers school for 2 years and then immediately went to work at the Mill in Newtown. He married Bessie Pinn and they had three children Edna, Gerald and Laurie. Edna went to live in Israel and then the UK and had four children ( Adam, Julia and Rowan and Serena). This part of the family is not contained in this archive. There have also been big gaps in documenting the second and third generation of the Pinn family as we lost touch.

Harry Jaffee took over from Joffe Marks as Managing Director when he died in 1955. Further information on his role in Premier Milling in the Dramatis Personae section.

Georgina Jaffee Pinn Family Series

in the early 1880’s a Lithuanian emigrant called Lazar Pinn, arrived on the shores of Cape Town. A watchmaker by trade, he set up shop, repairing watches and barometers from his hotel room. In 1893 after one or two disasters he opened L. Pinn and Co. at 45 Adderley Street, Cape Town. The company flourished and traded from these premises for 94 years, before moving head office to 30 St George’s Mall.
