Group photograph of the four Gluckman Brothers, sons of Joseph Gluckmann and the late Mrs Fanny Lena Gluckmann (nee Cohen) of 61 Fortescue Rd, Yeoville, Johannesburg and Vereeniging, Transvaal, South Africa. This photograph was taken during World War One, 1914-1919. Photographed from left to right are Private Bernard Gluckman, Signaller 3rd SA Infantry, Private Leon Gluckman 3rd SA Infantry (P.O.W.), Private Samuel Gluckman (1900-1916) 3rd South African Infantry and Lieutenant Philip Gluckman (1888-1916), London Regiment (Cyclists). Private Samuel Gluckman was killed in action in 1916 at Maricourt, Flanders Somme, France. Lieutenant Philip Gluckman was killed in action in 1916 in Somme, France. Both brothers are commemorated at the Thiepval Memorial, Thiepval, Departement de la Somme, Picardie, France.

Photograph of Lance Bombardier Bernard (Barney) Gruskin (1916-1942). He served in the South African Artillery, 5th Field Regiment Force. He was killed in the Battle of Gazala during the Western Desert Campaign of the Second World War, on the 30th May 1942. He was the son of Daniel and Johanna Aletta Gruskin (nee Sandflats), of 9 Park Lane, Port Elizabeth, South Africa. He is buried in the Knightsbridge War Cemetery, Acroma, Libya.

Photograph of a memorial plaque of Nelson Joseph Hefferman (1923-1945), Service no. 68576, Rank Able Seaman South African Naval Forces, Unit H.M.S. Encounter who died whilst a POW in Kampong Makassar, Indonesia. He was the son of James and Annie Hefferman of Port Elizabeth, Cape Province, South Africa. There is a commemoration in the Ambon War Cemetery, Indonesia.

Photograph of a wooden plaque with the signatures of Prisoners of War, from Macassar (Kampong Makassar) in Ujung Pandang, Indonesia. It was one of several internment camps on the island of Java in which the Japanese interned enemy civilians, mostly Dutch, after the Dutch East Indies fell to Japanese forces in 1942. H.M.S. Encounter, an E class destroyer was one of the Allied ships tasked to intercept Japanese invasion convoys during the Dutch East Indies Campaign in February 1942 and participated in the Battle of the Java Sea. H.M.S. Encounter was sunk a few days later in the Second Battle of the Java Sea on 1 March 1942 and most of her crew were rescued by a Japanese ship the next day. About a quarter of them died in captivity before the end of the war in 1945. Nelson Joseph Hefferman (1923-1945) Service no. 68576, Rank Able Seaman South African Naval Forces, Unit H.M.S. Encounter died whilst a POW . He was the son of James and Annie Hefferman of Port Elizabeth, Cape. His signature is carved on the wooden plaque above the words 'Prisoner of War'. There is a commemoration in the Ambon War Cemetery, Indonesia.
