Photograph of Leopold Hermer,son of Jacob (Jankel) (1836-1916) and Mina Hermer (born Goldberg) (1844-1911). His siblings were Zundel Hermer (1875-1941), Johanna Friedlander (1876-1946), Rosa Thal (Rosenthal) (nee Hermer) (1880 - 1954) and Esther Beile Hermer (1887-1942). He and his siblings were all born in Grobin Kurland (Grobiņa, Latvia). He remained in Libau (Liepāja) Latvia. His brother Zundel, and two sisters, Johanna Friedlander and Rosa Thal came to South Africa. His sister Esther Beile Hermer, an artist and musician lived in the Netherlands. During World War II she was deported to Auschwitz Concentration Camp Poland. This photograph was taken in Libau (Liepāja) Latvia. Source: South African Archives

Photograph of family members of the Chlavin/Hlawin family. It was taken in Latvia, circa 1927. The family originally lived in Piedruja and then moved to Riga. Siska Chlavin and Slawa Chlavin (nee Dorin) (1860-1941) had 6 children - Tewel Josel Chlavin (1888-1970), Rocha Plokchin (nee Chlavin) (1891-1944), Faibusch Chlavin (1893-1941), Feiga Chlavin born in 1896, Mascha Kagan (nee Chlavin) (1904-1974), and Gitta Usdin (nee Chlavin) (1909-1984). Many family members perished in the Holocaust. Some managed to flee to the USSR and returned to Riga after the war. Photographed in the middle row from left to right: Feibusch Chlavin (1893-1941), his wife Hanna Chlavin (nee Schein) (1893-1941), unknown, Slawa Chlavin (nee Dorin) (1860-1941), Gitta Usdin (nee Chlavin), unknown.
