Marijampole Lithuania, "Some soldiers from the 9th Company celebrating Pesach"

Photograph of 30 uniformed Jewish soldiers from 9th Company of the Lithuanian Army. A Company of soldiers refers to a military unit, here just referring to some soldiers from a particularly unit of the Lithuanian Army. This group of soldiers have gathered in Marijampole to celebrate Pesach (the Hebrew word for 'Passover').

Passover, or Pesach in Hebrew, is one of the three major pilgrimage festivals of ancient Israel and commemorates the Exodus from Egypt. Its name comes from the miracle in which God “passed over” the houses of the Israelites during the tenth plague. Centered on the family or communal celebration of the seder (ritual meal), Passover is one of the most beloved of all Jewish holidays.
Passover refers to a celebration of ancient Jews and their exodus from Egypt. The name of the festival refers specifically to a miracle whereby God “passed over” the homes of Israelites during the tenth plague. This holiday is mainly organized around the family or communal celebration of this miracle, which is celebrated through a ritual meal called Seder. This meal involves eating together as a family or community, and retelling the story of Passover. The soldiers are seated at long tables and are holidng their glasses in toast of the celebration. Some civilians are seen in the background standing against the outside wall of a building, who seem to be joining the soldiers' celebration Seder. In the year that this photograph was taken (1924), according to the Jewish calendar date of Nisan 15th-16th, Passover Seder fell on April 19th-20th. The people in the photograph, from left to right, are: Avram and Aaron Leibowitz, Hilleurd standing upon the machine above the other members of the photograph, and Yaakov Leibowitz on the right of the photograph. Avram and Aaron are standing to the right of the machine, Hilleurd is upon the machine, and Yaakov is standing to the left of the machine. On the far right of the photograph, and thus on the far left of the machine and Yaakov, there is the factory manager and assistant, who are unnamed.

Moletai Lithuania, "Folk Shul pre-primary school students and some teachers"

Photograph of the children that attended the Yiddish Folk Shul pre-primary school. Compared to the previous photograph, these children seem younger, which aligns with this being the pre-primary school rather than the primary school. The children are arranged in rows, with the smallest/youngest sitting on the floor in the front row. The two female teachers are seated in the centre of the photograph among the students.

Vilnius Lithuania, "A young child named Alexander Kreine"

Photograph of Alexander Kreine (alternative spelling: Aleksandr Kreyn), a young child around the age of 5 years old standing on the icy streets of Vilnius. The caption for this photograph notes that this child is named Alexander Kreine, which matches with a famous Jewish composer born around 1882. Since this photograph was taken in 1938, this is not the famous composer, but the similarity in names is interesting nonetheless.

While Vilnius was not formally ghettoized by 1938, only forming in September 1941, the oppressive policies and hardships for Jews in most of Europe and especially in Eastern Europe were apparent and heightened by this point, setting a sombre tone for this photograph.

Vilnius Lithuania, "A painting of the reflection of a building in Vilnius"

Photograph of a drawing or painting that seems to depict the reflection of a street with buildings and a pavement as it would appear if mirrored in a puddle. There are cracks in the pavement, and the sky looks dark and ominous. The caption of the photograph says "depth in proportion", perhaps indicating the title of this drawing/painting.
