Photograph of a panjehauser taken from the street outside in Panevezys. A panjehauser refers to a type of house with a wooden exterior, clay walls and a straw roof. These kinds of houses were popular amongst Jewish people and in these small towns, and were often used to house both people and animals. The insides of these houses would be reinforced with straw bales in order to insulate them and keep the house warm. [Source: http://www.wwiilectureinstitute.com/stories/beck.htm]. This panjehauser is one of a few on this street, but no people are included in the photograph.
